This lookbook compiles bathrooms with unlikely textural, material and colour combinations, creating dramatic schemes in rooms renowned for sterility.

The bathroom’s rigid function as a place for washing, cleaning and bathing has led them to be an oft overlooked room in the home when it comes to design.

The following examples, including a South African lodge, an upstate New York farmhouse and a dentist’s office-turned-home, all demonstrate how these rooms can be as design-forward as the rest of the home.

This is the latest in our lookbooks series, which provides visual inspiration from Dezeen’s archive. For more inspiration, see previous lookbooks featuring autumnal-coloured interiors, distinctive hair salons and double-height living rooms.

Floating Farmhouse, USA, by Tom Givone

Glossy brown floorboards contrast with a clean stainless steel shell that wraps around the antique bathtub in the main bathroom of this house in rural New York state, renovated by designer Tom Givone.

The bath, which has a copper inside topped with a wooden lip around its edge, was salvaged from a tenement building in New York City’s Lower East Side.

OL6, Belgium, by Jan Lefevere

A bubblegum-blue colour picked from the original facade of this former 1960s dental practice features throughout the interior’s floor, including in the bathroom.

Here, local architect Jan Lefevere contrasted the retro block colour with a bath boasting a side panel clad in dimensional stained plywood, in reference to the building’s staircase.

Curciu guesthouse, Romania, by Modul 28

A timber structure provides bathroom facilities for this church rectory-turned-guesthouse in Transylvania, converted by local studio Modul 28.

Pale timber is seen throughout the inside of the pavilion-style building, and its many knots and natural grain contrasts with the corrugated yellow metal panels that line the inside of the shower.

Roughly-finished concrete walls are juxtaposed against a sleek stainless steel sink in the bathroom of this Spanish home by local studio Twobo Arquitectura.

A trio of different tiles complete the intentionally mismatched aesthetic of the space, which extends beyond the bathroom and throughout the rest of the interior.

Danish designer Julie Cloos Mølsgaard paired conventional wooden floorboards with distinctive red marble fittings in this townhouse bathroom.

Situated within homeware brand Vipp‘s southern French townhouse, the bathroom’s ring-shaped shower base, floor and pedestal have a striated rose-and-grey colouring, offset by the grain of the wooden boards.

The deep greens and earth tones that decorate the interior of this South African lodge are distilled into this bathroom, with its conjunction of dark green walls, wooden panels and stone sink.

Naturally-occurring stripes are common to both the striated marble basin and the grain of the wood.

Primrose Hill townhouse, UK, by Studio Hagen Hall

This townhouse references 1970s Californian modernism throughout, not least in the main bathroom, where cork tiles cover the floor and sides of the bathtub.

The cork’s textural appearance is contrasted with a baby pink curtain in front and block peach-coloured cabinets behind.
